On the first day of the Parliament’s winter assembly on February 16 2021, a general election for the Parliament of Greenland was called. The day of the election has been set to April 6 2021, the same day as the elections for the municipal council, district council and the church council.
Prior to the call for election, on February 8, the now former coalition party Demokraatit decided to leave the governing coalition, leaving Siumut and Nunatta Qitornai as the minority government.
Subsequently, the Parliament processed a bill from the opposition (Inuit Ataqatigiit, Demokraatit, and Naleraq) to call an extraordinary election without a specific date. The Parliament voted to hold the election on April 6, 2021.
